The Legend Of How The Elkhound Got His Curled Tail

I will try my hand at yet another of the famous Elkhound legends, this time the Legend of how the Elkhound got his curled tail. As with any legend the truth over centuries of telling can be off slightly, or stretched slightly, but for the most part legends have more fact than fiction. All legends Elkhound in nature come down generation to generation, only the old families know them today. Hopefully my rendition will live on in your mind and be passed on as well.

So The Legend of How the Norwegian Elkhound Got his Curled Tail.

Way back many centuries past there was a young and skillful woodsman and hunter, his name they say was Tore Ullin. He was known far and wide to be an honest man, and very good with dogs, and his Elkhound Bram, was always to be found by his side.
Each summer there was a dance festival that folks came from miles to attend. From Kvernbro Valley came Kransen. No one liked him, he was an evil man, bad to the core they say.
On the second day of the festival Kransen provoked a fight with Tore. No one knows why, some say Kransen had made a threat to harm Bram, others say it was drink, even others say a woman.

It the fight Kransen was killed by Tore. Unjustly, Tore became a hunted man. He fled into the night with his Elkhound Bram to a distant, beautful valley. Tore and Bram hunted together and lived in caves in the mountains for years, escaping the slain Kransen's vengeful clan.

In the deep snow and frost Bram's tail often became encrusted with ice and snow. It dragged behind him like a frozen broom making hunting difficult. One day Tore took Bram's tail and tied it over his back with a leather strip cut from the hide of a Moose. He made a bend in the last couple inches of his tail to tie the leather to. From that day forward the Elkhounds tail is always tightly curled and never fully straightens out that last couple inches, even when they let it down.

Loki is a result of the mating with Bram and Kamp, the only mating that Bram did outside the matings with Tora. Tora is featured below.

Offspring of Loki are in our breeding program today. Vana is one of his most famous daughters.

Tora - Mated Only To BramTora - Legendary foundation female at Kamia Kennels - Mated Only To Bram

The legendary Tora, our prized past foundation female had a tail that would rival any Norwegian Elkhound and she was bred her entire breeding life to only Bram.

The pups from this combination are prolific in our breeding program today. Our generational program stemming from these two legends is amazing.

Rita currently has a new litter on the ground she is one of the outstanding granddaughters of Tora and Bram.

Tora - Mated Only To BramKamp - Foundation female - Great Grandmother to Riatta and Grandmother to Teeko

This is the other female that Bram mated with to provide our foundational breeding stock that thrives today in our program.

Revna is just one of the many females in our program, she is a Great Granddaughter of this magnificent foundation female. Teeko is a Grandson of this legend.

There are many more, the famous twins, Tekla and Tuva were daughters of Kamp and Bram.

There is no doubt, the Legend of the Curled Tail of the Elkhound lives strong at Kamia Kennels.
